(Translated by Google) The dives themselves were terrific and can only be recommended! Great color world, the wreck and the fish are great and it was a real experience. So only to recommend….
…if if is really advanced and preferably has own equipment. Unfortunately, the rental equipment wasn’t that great… I’m almost 2m tall, got a BCD that was too small and the wrong fin on the boat. Buddy checks were not done. Current is (as described by the organizer) strong. Unfortunately I had to go back up alone because there was only one instructor and my buddy stayed down and the other one was already up. If you don’t know everything that well, not so great.
In addition, the ride on the metal boat is really hard. I still have back pain from it. The swell is also quite strong at the dew point, so that I got sick despite taking a travel pill…others did too.

– via

Steve and Matt are absolute legends. This was one of us our absolute favourite dive locations across the globe, and Steve and Matt’s service was absolutely on point. Funny, professional, organised and absolute champions of the reef. Steve signed off some deep dive skills, and was patient and answered all questions. Steve and Matt had a professional eye on all.divers at all times, whilst everyone got to do their own thing in their buddy groups. Absolutely one of the best experiences I have ever had. Thanks team! (If only I had a tank to remember the shop ). – via

I’ve been out to the SS Yongala three times so far with Steve and Matt at Yongala Dive and every time has been a great experience. The shop is just over an hour’s drive from Townsville (leave TSV at 6 am if driving, will leave you time for a coffee at Maccas in Ayr before getting there!) Or you can stay on the camp site next to dive shop and stay in bed a little longer.
From the minute you arrive at the shop, there is a welcoming and fun atmosphere with coffee/tea and biscuits waiting for you as you get your gear sorted and do a dive briefing. Heavy gear is loaded on to the boat for you, then you meet the boat at the beach down the road and on board for a quick 30 min trip out to the site (2 x 250 hp engines on the back of the boat make for a fast trip). The dive site itself is teeming with sea life – big rays, sharks, sea snakes, giant trevally, soft corals and lots and lots of small fish to see. Every visit I’ve had has been a treat. Snacks and a bit of the wreck’s history are shared during a surface interval. Then after your second dive, its straight back to the dive shop to shower and enjoy a sausage sizzle. You are usually finished around 2 pm ish so an easy drive back to TSV if that’s where you’re based. I highly recommend Yongala Dive for anyone wanting a quick, safe, fun and easy trip out to dive on the SS Yongala. Thanks Steve and Matt for being such great dive hosts. – via
