I was randomly searching for a campsite while there for the weekend, hiking Tinker Cliffs and McAffee Knob.
Wilderness Adventure was close’ish, and they had hot showers/a heated bath house (this makes for a world of difference in cold weather).
Their website showed waiting lists for everything, but we called, and the owner (jaimie) responded on the phone.
She said to just come by. She’d find space for us.
We did! We checked in with the owner, and she was working a woodfired pizza oven for a big group. She said to set up a tent and come back if we wanted pizza. Or beer. Or wine.
She spoke to use several times and was wonderful each time. And this is the owner of a LARGE establishment — 500 acres of land, camping, mountain biking, etc. She was working alongside her employees.
Their website was having problems, so we paid cash for the campsite, and she ran off to get us change and brought it right back.
It’s along a creek/river (that google maps suggests you drive across, depending on how you’re getting there — DONT DO IT), so you hear coyotes off in the distance, barred owls hooting back and forth, and even a few bobcat screams at night along the river. We had a barred owl a couple trees away from our tent. Amazing.
This place has been in business for 30 years, and the owner is working alongside the staff — passed down from parents to children.
It’s amazing, absolutely.
If you’re coming to hike, this is a great place to camp and have a hot shower/heated bath house when not cozy around a fire or in a tent. – via
