DO NOT GO HERE. I had an awful experience here (and so did my friends). I went looking for a refresher and told them I had been 14 years since initial open water training and 10 yrs without a dive and that I couldn’t remember much. They suggested I’d be fine for the open water dive, anyway. I asked for a refresher in the pool first before committing to open water. Went in the pool with them for a refresher which included ZERO basic material review. I had a hard time in the pool and forgot basic stuff. Out of the pool the instructor outright accused me of lying about my PADI open water cert. Humiliating and insulting. Furthermore, they refused to refund money for the outdoor dive even though that dive was full anyway (I was only on a wait list – and had only agreed to go if the pool went well). I eventually got a refund when I argued at length with them. Someone is going to die on one of their trips given how nonchalant and disorganized they are.
Edit: note the response below, refusing to take responsibility. i wrote a letter the day after and emailed it to the aqua society- so they received it. Shame. – via

Did my Advanced diver course with Aqua Society a few years ago. Very helpful and encouraging, staff are knowledgeable about the equipment. Now I still enjoy their monthly fun dives (called club dives but you don’t need to be a UBC student nor club member to join). It’s a great way to meet new dive friends, the bbq is delicious and dm Alex is awesome at pointing out cool/hidden animals. I would reccomend this shop – via

UBC Aqua has some of the most knowledgeable and attentive instructors I have ever met! I have taken courses here all the way from Advanced Open Water to Divemaster and have seen firsthand how much the instructors care about each and every student who comes through UBC Aqua. Their club dives also provide a fun, relaxed and welcoming environment to really allow diving to flourish as a passion. I will definitely be diving with UBC Aqua for years to come! – via

Course is too fast paced, and relatively large groups with very little opportunity to practice under supervision if you don’t opt for the private lesson route and even then. Each exercise is practiced at a strict minimum, if possible only once… very different from my normal approach where practice makes perfect. Great instructors with lots of experience but this could be the down fall as it makes the class relay on pass successes and not assessing the special need of each group. Timing allows for very little flexibility if anything goes wrong, if I had to chose now, I would of chosen an other provider. – via

I took my PADI Rescue Diver Course with UBC Aquasociety, and I am currently in their Divemaster program. They are a professional very friendly group of instructors. Between all of the staff there is a vast and varied knowledge set on the sport of scuba diving.
Weather you are interested in recreational diving, technical diving, gear maintenance, scientific diving etc these folks have someone who can help you with your goals. They have a full service shop, including air fills, rentals, retail items, and gear maintenance, and they have one of the few course directors in the province of BC Canada. Come on by and get to know the crew, enjoy some cold water diving with us in beautiful British Columbia! – via
