Torii Beach SCUBA locker is no more. What was run by ARMY MWR and the single best SCUBA shop and repair station on island is gone. The rental and equipment maintenance section SORT OF exists. The SCUBA sales store is GONE!
USMC MCCS moved in and took over the air fill and equipment rental operation, except that the air fill portion isn’t working due to a compressor broke for more than six months. A certified repair person for the motor exists on island, but Army MWR will not allow MCCS to use this person because of former Army MWR affiliation. Instead, the repair is on hold while they try to bring in a maintenance technician from outside Japan, through the 14 day quarantine to assess and hopefully repair the item. This is at much greater expense and in the mean time, the rest of the system sits unused and deteriorating.
As for the SCUBA retail store, it was run out of business in order to create an “Outdoor Recreation” function and outdoor gear sales store. The claim was that the SCUBA store was not generating a profit and that Torii MWR can make more with this outdoor rec rental and retail store.
This once great, world class PADI certified facility that was more than self-sustaining was destroyed in favor of “something that would bring higher profits.” When did MWR programs become for-profit businesses and where do the profits go?
Sad and unfortunate that this happened. In the mean time, no SCUBA tank fills at Torii at all, gotta go to Foster for that because Kadena Marina can’t be trusted to fill a balloon. – via

The staff here is always super helpful and friendly. They helped me out a great deal and really care about the divers and guiding them in what gear might work best. The stock has been slowly dwindling, but have heard they’re changing focus from being scuba-centric to general outdoor rec type stuff. They were the only place I could find weights for awhile which was helpful! – via
