PD is a very enjoyable and a must see experience. We walked the short Paseo Del Rio trail in perfect weather and canyon 70° temperatures. We want to hike more trails the next time we pass through. Somehow we missed the Cowboy dugout on PDR so we have to go back before we leave. The entry fee was $16 for two people.
EDIT:12/07/22 – We did find the Cowboy Dogout and it was a short walk from the park entrance end of the PDR. – via

This park is absolutely beautiful. Lots of great hikes. Nice campsites. Only drawback I would say for us on the trip was that they were under a burn ban and we could haven’t a fire. You could rent propane fire rings but with the wind it did little good which kind of explained why the burn ban was in effect. – via

Palo Duro Canyon is an unknown gem. While I can kind of understand how it’s not quite a national park, it is quite interesting and worth a visit. One thing I love is driving up to it. You’re driving along and there is nothing to see – just flat land. It is a giant hole in the ground, so you don’t see it until you get there. Some interesting, lesser seen wildlife like large spiders and horned toads seem common there. – via

Words cannot describe how absolutely stunning Palo Duro Canyon is in person! My first hike was the lighthouse trail and I am so excited to plan my trip there to try more trails. My experience was wonderful. The variety and options available for hiking and riding trails is excellent. The campsites are beautiful and spread out throughout the canyon so you can really select where you’d like to be. I highly recommend a visit! – via
