When you make the effort and cost to get to Vieques, the very last thing you want is to leave any of the beauty and wonder of this island unseen. The worst thing you can do is to under invest in your own experiences! We chose Steve and Parts Unseen at the recommendation of a friend who travels globally 100% of the time and could not be happier with that call. Here’s a guy with life experiences all over the world and a keen appreciation for nature and his home island who came back to ensure that visitors to Vieques got to see the things he loves about his home. He is not only a veteran, but part historian, part naturalist, part salsa instructor, and a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to understand this amazing island. We get to call him ‘friend’ now as well.
We explored beautiful ruins (which Steve knew a TON about!), climbed erratic rocks of unknown origin (which Steve knew a TON about!), explored half a dozen very different beaches each with different biology and geology (which Steve knew a TON about!), snorkeled distant location and swam with turtles and a thousand other colorful fish (which Steve knew a TON about!), got private poolside salsa lessons (which Steve knew a TON about!), and finished the day with a moonless bioluminescent back crystal clear kayak adventure with a wonderful guitar accompaniment!
I need to expand on the bioluminescent bay a bit… There are a few different ways to do this… One way will have you herded into a bus with 18 of your closest strangers, and rushed through this exquisite natural resource while having orders barked at you. I know, we witnessed it next to us – until Steve and the crystal clear Parts Unseen kayaks split off to an uninhabited part of the bay where the bioluminescence was unreal, glowing sharks swam around us, water drips down your arms like rivers of silver, fish jump out of the bay in front of you making your own natural firework show, and while the herd of tourists are out and back in 25 minutes, never exploring the mangrove areas where the fish and magical glowing water are immensely plentiful, we relaxed while classical guitar played for us 20 feet away for an hour more.
Seriously, imagine you had Niagara Falls, or the Grand Canyon to yourselves… This bay is rarer than both of those, and something you’ll never see elsewhere. If I can pass along any advice, do not underestimate the difference between a private tour of the island and the bioluminescent bay versus the commercialized busload crowd. Spend the tiny bit more to DO IT RIGHT. – via
