In a coaching session with Yoshua I learned to understand the essence of freediving. He tought me that it’s not about depth. It’s all about efficiency with a refined technique, an accurate technique to deeply relax and be in the water with an aligned mind. With patience and clarity he explains and demonstrates the most essential points for freediving. He has quiet a good handling in documenting the diving with his video camera, also taking amazing pictures from the diver and the precious underwater world. The videos help to understand where to refine the technique in an analysis after the diving. Yoshua is super experienced and provides a huge sport science knowledge, as though he has big empathy for different personalities and is deeply connected to nature and the ocean. He knows exactly how to create a space for relaxation to feel safe and confident. Diving with him was flowing and mind blowing to me. He reminded me on a deep burried wish of my childhood that finally came to the surface and made me feel so alive while saying „hello“ to the little clown fishes in the anemone coral. Yoshua, I thank you so much for reconnecting me with the ocean. I‘ll never forget. – via

(Translated by Google) This is a small shop where you can do both free diving and scuba diving. Since it is conducted on a small scale, I was able to receive attentive and detailed coaching. Joshua speaks fluent English and goes slowly and comfortably. I go out on a boat and train for about 5 minutes, and after lunch, I review training or take a walk. There was no time to get bored because we did a Menjangan tour or fun diving at the beach. Above all, if you dive here, you can get a life shot.^^

The term ‘life-changing’ is something I’ve often cringed at and never felt really applied to any experience or sport I’ve participated in. However, being introduced to the simultaneously Uber-relaxing yet panic-inducing sport of freediving has made me finally succumb to using this term.
I recently started my AIDA 2 freediving certification with Yoshua and Ousia Freediving Academy in the quiet village of Pemuteran in North-West Bali. At first I was somewhat hesitant to make the journey but found Pemuteran to be a wonderful change of pace from the relatively hectic south and a perfect location to come and complete a freediving course.
Yoshua is a very kind and down to earth person who not only has a deep passion for freediving but is also clearly a passionate educator. His relaxed teaching style ensured I felt comfortable throughout the entire process and allowed me to really engage that elusive child-like excitement and curiosity that comes from discovering something completely new and fascinating.
I felt that through the process of learning to freedive there were an abundance of lessons to be learned that have great crossover into many other aspects of life, and I think becoming a better freediver will naturally translate into becoming a better and more self-aware human being. Yoshua was a great guide throughout that process and offered valuable insights into the obstacles our minds may be unwittingly throwing in our path, and how the seemingly simple activity of holding one’s breath and diving into a blue body of water can bring these to the fore.
Learning to freedive with Yoshua not only served as an introduction to this weirdly addictive and mesmerising sport, but also offered a plethora of learning opportunities that can be used in improving other areas of life. If you approach your learning with Yoshua with an open and receptive attitude, I am sure you too will come away with some wisdom to apply to your life.
(As a side note, he is also a skilled photographer and the images he captures are wonderful!) – via

I really enjoyed training with Yoshua – in fact I experienced probably the biggest progress in such a long time. I could dive super relax (weird because I’m usually anxious) and I learned a lot from Yoshua even from only one coaching session. I still use the technique given by Yoshua up until now. His explanation was very practical and easily understandable.
Above the water, Yoshua and Kathrin at Kuda Laut treated us and made us feel like home. Yoshua even helped me to poke my wet suit so there’s no trapped air inside that annoy my equalisation!
I always recommend my other friends to go training with Yoshua if they have the opportunity because it’s so worth it. And I would definitely come back again sooner than later! – via
