My buddy and I flew out from California to check this place out. We’re not experts, but we grew up in Santa Cruz, CA, have traveled around the world surfing and know our way around a lineup.
Prior to our visiting, we spoke with a wonderfully helpful (and patient) guy at the shop. He was great and recommended doing the Advanced Reef Training prior to booking an hour. Doing so also discounts your next hour by 50%. I cannot express how critical it was to take the coaching session prior to getting on the wave.
Ray was our coach and he was amazing. Loads of gratitude for his efforts in recommending boards, talking about the wave and various strategies and also shouting tips from the pier.
We booked a 90m coaching session and then an hour thereafter. The 90m turned into about 30-40m in the water.
The EAST Reef wave is VERY different from an ocean wave, and requires you to have an exact takeoff point and a bit more foam than you expect. You can cheat a bit but not much. It took me the First 2 sessions to even get the takeoff down.
After stepping up in foam (we took an hour break, highly recommended taking an hour break between sessions), I was finally able to lock in the takeoff. As Ray said, stick as close as you can to the metal pier, you’ll naturally angle out once the wave comes and pop up quick and angle towards the pier ASAP.
For me, the main goal was to ride the thing until the end both ways. The EAST wave is a bit of a screamer and unforgiving, not many sections to slow down, just quick hits. And watch out for the section at the mid-flag, the wave slows down, but keep your speed to make the section.
Overall, a great experience with wonderful customer service and friendly people (Victoria, Jake, Ray, Madison). Y’all really made it a great trip.
Only bummer in the experience — A real nice lifeguard named Warren took some photos of us on 09/26/18, we bought him a round of beers and he never sent the shots! Lame.
Oh yeah, and it gets REALLY expensive like, real quick.
All-in-all, 5 star experience. Thanks! – via

I had a blast out here. Yes it’s a little pricey but it’s ridiculously easy to get in position as opposed to the ocean and every single wave is rideable. 1st timer never paddled on a board, go Bay wave. Any experience before, I say you could do the inside wave. Very easy going if you remember to get a board in a high enough volume. Lots of people wanted little boards and kept getting passed by the wave or it was too unstable. – via

Outrageous great time! My son and I went every weekend during the summer. It was well worth the drive from Houston and we plan to do it this fall. We just returned from Mission Beach in San Diego. The waves at times were as big as the Reef Wave at NLAND but you had to wait a long time to catch them. We can catch 24 great waves an hour at NLAND. At Mission Beach it took on the average about 4 hours of waiting to catch that many waves. If your a great surfer you can get a 50 second ride at NLAND. The longest wave at Mission Beach we were able catch lasted no longer than 16 seconds. We got a lot more waves for the money at NLAND. – via

It was ok. It is what it is- an artificial ocean wave. However it is smack dab in Texas, so that’s pretty cool. It was a little pricey, and a little crowded. I rode the middle wave, not the reef wave, and wish I had tried the reef wave. It’s all whitewater if you don’t hit the reef wave. I’m not an experienced surfer, but I have surfed some in the ocean, which was more fun. But where else can you catch a wave that isn’t at the ocean? We got there an hour early, and had about 30 minutes of time to kill. On really busy days it’s probably safer to get there an hour early. A day after I surfed, I developed a severe eye infection in one eye, which is a major bummer. Did the water cause it? I can’t say for sure, but it’s enough to make me not want to go back out of water safety concerns. It may be up to county standards, but that’s not enough for me. – via
