The brutal war ended. The darkness of exodus began across a raging sea. The refugee crisis had taken its own dimension and wrought a devastating human toll. Against all odds, we arrived at Pulau Bidong Refugee Camp at the end of 1979, PB 006. We left genocides and atrocities behind. I had already met my maker and smiled at death in the face. Boat People. Free at last. Freedom has a painful price in torment. We are eternally grateful to all volunteers, United Nations UNHCR, former President Jimmy Carter and America, Canada, Australia, South Korea, France and and many Western countries.
Bidong is an Island of Hope and Miracle. These flowers are for the unfortunates and lost souls in our collective memory. RIP. – via google

Yes,why not 5 stars .My second older brother was here in 1980. After that my mum and I came here in 1982. We only stayed on this island for about 4 months, I was 12 at the time, but all the memories when I was there are still with me until now. Love the beach where I was spending hours swimming and collecting all different types of sea snails when the tides were low. THANK YOU, PULAU BIDONG. LOVE ?? YOU. – via google

Pada 8 Ogos 1978, Pulau Bidong telah dijadikan tapak peralihan pelarian perang oleh kerajaan Malaysia dan Suruhanjaya Tinggi Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu bagi Pelarian (UNHCR). Selain daripada pelarian Vietnam, ia turut menempatkan pelarian Kemboja pada akhir 70-an, yang lari daripada rejim Khmer Rouge. Ketika ia ditutup pada 1991, kira-kira 250,000 pelarian berada di kem.

Pulau ni sangat sesuai untuk dijadikan pulau perlancongan. Terdapat kemudahan Toilet, surau, tapak khemah dan pondok oleh Jabatan Muzium. Jika hendak menggunakan tapak ini perlu mohon dgn jabatan muzium.

Selain tapak ni, terdapat beberapa tapak lagi iaitu UMT dan persendirian.

Pulau ni masih bersih dan tidak tercemar. Harap kerajaan terengganu dapat majukan pulau ini. – via google

I was there as a refugee from April 1979 to Oct 1979. Beautiful island that many would call it temporary home for the first taste of “freedom”, I remember as a young boy, every morning we collected our rations, early afternoon we went uphill to study English, then we walked to District C Beach for a swim and dived off the cliff. Went back to our hut and fetched water from the well for mum to take a shower. Night time we would stay up chit chat and dozed off to beautiful Vietnamese music that played on loud speakers all over the island. Thank you Pulau Bidong for the memories. – via google
