Mile Hi Skydiving Center,
I just wanted to tell you of my experience yesterday skydiving with Mile Hi Skydiving center.
I was warmly greeted by your receptionist and processed quickly. She directed my party to wait for a bus while seated in the blue chairs. We waited for a few minutes and chatted. We were then greeted by the enthusiastic bus driver, who kindly offered to load our camping chairs on the bus. We got on the bus, which we soon discovered had no suspension, and every bump we went over was very painful. To make matters worse, the road to skydiving hanger was filled with big bumps and generally was in horrible condition. My 82 year old father hurt his back on one of the bumps, and we were all very uncomfortable. We heard someone yelling at the driver afterwards to keep the bus speed under 20mph. I don’t think 20mpg would have been slow enough. The suspension on the bus needs to be fixed. After the jump, we left another way that was much better, so I wondered why we didn’t take that route even though it was a longer distance.
When we got to the hanger, the driver cheerily motioned for me and another jumper to go inside the hanger, and that someone would help us get suited up. We went in, and there were 20+ people milling around, and several with Mile Hi Ski Diving gear. I saw my name on the monitor as soon as I came in. I stood in the middle of the hanger for about 15 minutes, and no one talked to me or said anything. I was expecting someone to acknowledge my existence and tell me they’d be right with me. I was left wondering if anyone cared. Eventually, my jump partner came over and started suiting me up. He was very professional and knowledgeable. He gave me some quick instructions about being in and leaving the airplane. It was so quick and verbal only that I forgot some key parts, like not holding on to the airplane when we were getting ready to jump.
Everything went smoothly leaving the airplane and falling, although when he pulled the ripcord, I felt like my legs were going to be pulled off. This is probably normal. My partner spun me around some, which made me nauseous, but that wasn’t his fault. The actual falling was very exciting and fun.
When we approached the ground, my partner told me to keep my knees up, and that I could use my arms to hold my knees up, which I did. It seemed like we came in pretty fast and landed pretty hard. I think we skidded about 20′ and my dad said we bounced and kicked up a big cloud of dust. Unfortunately, my left ankle got stuck under us as we skid, and instantly went numb. When I looked at it, it was twisted funny and I was sure it was broken. (X Rays showed that it was broken in three places and dislocated.) I know sometimes bad landings happen and even people with over 2000 jumps have bad days, so I tried to remain cheerful.
What was disappointing was the reaction of some of the crew. One woman was instantly on the phone asking for an ambulance, and that was good. I declined the ambulance, since my injury was not life threatening. A couple of people held up a parachute to give me some shade, and that was good too. Someone brought over cups of water, which was good. What was not good was the indifference shown by most of the crew. While I was laying on the ground, I heard someone yell for help and then complained that no one by the hanger was paying attention. They seemed to be caught up in the business of putting stuff away from the jump I was on and getting ready for the next one. My jump partner and my wife went to get my car. While they were gone, my mother had to go round up people from the hanger to help load me in the car. That was disappointing.
My wife fortunately didn’t have to drive me across the horrible airport road and took me to a hospital. I am due for surgery today.
Overall, the jump was fun, but there were several parts that could have been better, even ignoring the broken ankle.
Update 4 months later: I never heard back from Mile Hi on any of my correspondence or even to say “Hello, how’s the ankle. “ – via

Had my first sky diving experience here and am hooked! Immediately signed up for a second jump!
My tandem instructor was Daniel (Ramirez?) and he was fantastic! He instructed me on all the things I needed to do to have the best experience possible! I highly recommend Daniel as a tandem instructor!
Looking forward to my next jump! – via
