Not only did this meet my expectations, it smashed them. First thing, unlimited dives… No time limits, dive as many times (safely) as you want! The sites with the sharks are only 10-12m depth, and with the bigger steel tanks they have I was racking up 2 hour dives with an hour surface interval and back down again constantly. In terms of sightings, we saw tiger sharks, we regularly saw many – 7 together at one time and the great hammer heads, not as easy to see but we got very lucky and had Queen, one of the biggest and friendliest around, along with 4-5 others throughout the 2 days. The wild dolphins were great too, crystal clear water throughout and 26°C water throughout the whole week! The crew – Mike, Ben, gaby and Jim were all great, always going out of their way to make us have the best experience possible. Definitely recommend this outfit and I will be returning back again next year for sure!!! – via

The staff is amazing and helpful, which is the saving grace.
Going on this expedition is like going to boot camp. Jim talks down to you. It’s his way or the highway. He one-ups you and has a story better than yours most of the time. There is no room for dialog.
Worse he’s a loose cannon with the real possibility of physically violence. I happened to have touched one of the sharks in a way he didn’t like, so he jumped on me as I was coming up from the water, both of us falling in while he hit me with all my gear in so I couldn’t fight back and screamed “how would you like this done to you?”, meaning what I did to one of “his” sharks. (I happened to have touched the tail of a reef shark following his protocol of anything behind the gills is ok).
This happened in international waters which he was quick to point out threatening to leave me in the Bahamas. Left thinking what my options were, I regretted choosing Jim Abernathy. This is the most unprofessional and downright wreckless liveaboard I’ve been on.
As far as the boat goes, it’s cramped even for me and I’m 5’6″. There isn’t a communal area except for a round table where everyone can’t fit and a smaller booth with camera equipment crowding around. It’s claustrophobic. – via

We have gone out with Jim many times. WE LOVE TIGER BEACH. If you are lucky enough to have Jim go out with you, get ready for non-stop learning. It is fascinating to just listen to his knowledge. On one trip we got to release baby turtles. That was incredible. Just incredible adventures on Shearwater. – via

I’m giving this a 4 star only because the front desk communication was inaccurate or wrong on a number of occasions. It may have been that COVID resulted in trip cancellation from 2020 and everything was in a state of flux, I don’t know. Overall, the trip was awesome. The arranged hotel’s shuttle was obvious at the airport and seamless. The ferry’s run every hour to the island. Go to the kiosk to buy round-trip tickets when the shuttle drops you off and make sure you keep the return tickets in a safe location – you’ll need them for the return. Once on the island, find a taxi past the main entrance of the ferry terminal. They quoted $17US but took $10US. The arranged hotel was quite and comfortable, away from the crowds.
Jim knows all of the good eateries and we enjoyed many fine meals. Note that dinners on the island are not inexpensive. Our group of 4 spent $70-100 nightly for meals. CC are accepted everywhere we went.
Food/drinks on the boat were plentiful and filling. Breakfast at the hotel was cold (cereal, yogurt, muffins, fruit, juice, etc.).
If you are prone to sea sickness, please make sure you have medication that is proven to work for you. Our 4 days on the water saw 2-5 ft seas. None of our group was prone to seasickness but others in our extended group on other boats were. They did not get to experience the full 4-days of adventure.
If you are adventurous, ask ahead of time to be place on the smaller, faster boat, if it is available during your trip. In rough seas it will be hard on the bones but you’ll get there first and likely leave last. One of the benefits of going with Jim is that you typically will be one of the first boats to the whale sharks and likely the last to leave. By the end of 4 days you will have had all of the whale shark sightings you can stand.
Finally, Jim was kind enough to share his daily photo shoot digitally with our 20-somthing daughter and her fiancee. She was thrilled to have access to a world-renowned photographer’s laptop!
Hope you are lucky enough to enjoy this trip. – via

I did the 2 Day/3 Night to Tiger Beach in October, it was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done. Jim and his staff are friendly, accommodating and obviously love sharks. Being close enough to a 14 foot Tiger to make eye contact and know they are looking back at you just as intently, is indescribable. I can’t wait to do it again and would highly recommend to anyone who wants to get up close and personal with sharks! – via
