I am so glad to have chosen Divers West for my Open Water PADI certification. They are incredibly welcoming and helpful, and I shared many laughs with my dive group. Shoutout to Aileen (dive instructor) and Kate (dive master) for being so helpful and patient, especially with how many times it took me to become comfortable with my mask skills. I appreciate everyone who works here, and how transparent the shop is about the course itself and the gear you purchase. Javier also deserves all the praise for being so informative and responsive. Thank you all for creating such amazing memories! – via

I had such an amazing experience with my first time ever diving. Signing up for the class from the website is easy and navigating around the course is simple as well.
Even if you are completely new to diving, the courses very well prepare you for what to expect and possible hazards that you could encounter. Some basics:
-Get a mask that fits
-You’d need to experiment with different fins that match your swimming style.
-Get the hose with a valve, you’ll need it when youre hitting the real waves.
-Buy the boots with the extra layers; your feet and fins will thank you.
-Always use defog every time you can because it will fog every time it could.
-Remember to breathe.
-Have a separate bag for your valuables.
My class’ instructor was Mark Kempe, and he was the most personable person I’ve ever interacted with. He loves talking about VR (Half-Life: Alyx) and software – he loves that stuff. He also used to fly planes, ride bikes – pretty much everything – he’s done it.
Javier, the owner, is such a cool guy too. Tons of fun experience to share and encourages you to join them, too. He likes flight simulator games. haha
We started off with 2 days of pool diving. We got familiar with our gear, practice basic skills, we even got to play around with the extra air we have left to get comfortable.
Same thing was with day 2 – we picked up where we left off and we just had the rest of the time to continue practicing the skills that we could improve on.
Day 3 – it was at Veterans Park, Redondo Beach. It was raining too, and it added to the already fun trip. I felt very comfortable with what ive learned in the pool and i was actually pretty excited for our first open water dive. Got to see an octopus. Remember, to walk on your feet until you cant walk anymore and then put your fins on. Dont be afraid of the open water and stay close with your buddy.
Day 4 – CATALINA! When you get to Catalina, USE THE TRANSPORT SERVICE – its SUPER WORTH IT. They will pick up and load one bag and transport it to and from the dive site and they will even store it for you until you are ready to leave – it will save your back and it will save your energy. At the dive site, you dont even have to go far to see the beautiful stuff – its right there when you hit the water! Mark even saw a technical diver with the advance gear and had him show us how it works and how its different. I think that person was a technical level diver and he also explained everything very well. WE GOT TO SEE THE BLACK SEA BASS!!! OMG.
I cant wait to make new friends and go on more dives. This opens a whole new world of opportunity and adventure for me, and its only going to get better and more fun from here. – via

Brand spanking new to diving and Just finished getting my Open Water Certification through Divers West! This team is outstanding!!! I can’t just single out 1 instructor. Everyone worked so well as a team to help me not only train safely, but have fun while I did it! Nate, Kait, Aileen, Conrad, Chet, and Javier all took time at some point to give great advice and patiently help an older dog like me learn some new tricks. I loved the experience so much I went back to buy my actual gear from Javier. The level of personal attention and care is the stuff you only see in movies about small local shops and their relation to the community. He and Kait took their time explaining many options of dive equipment and really helped to get me what would work best for me. You can’t put a price on that level of personal attention and Expertise. My dive experience has just begun and it’s off to the best start possible thanks to everyone at Divers West! – via

took the class october 2018 this owner Javier Lopez promised and talk very nice and , don’t worry we figure out but after you enroll in class every thing upside down, and really BS you will get the poor , old equipment for training, he will take advance of that and make you pay more for renting good equipment , and by the way he will make you pay extra 1 addition trip to Catalina to complete the PADI certificate ..so you end up pay a few hundred dollars more , and 10% off what ever you buy from him is BS too, his sale equipment more than 15% ,
I almost drowned in training I complaint to him about equipment failed , not working properly , he admitted it old and rental and has been using many time ..so I asked him money back or I take legal action to his business .. He agree to pay 1/3 amount I Paid to him , he wrote a check and that check was bad, no payment ,
and pool training totally unsafe , reckless , they did not care you be a safe diver or a reckless diver , as long you pay him more money to get PADI certificate, my review is honest and truthfully , they mistreated student, bad business , no honor and reckless training. I will file small claim code section 1719 to diver west , I just to want to share my review to people to be aware of this business ,
this owner think he can foul all the people . all other student in my class have to pay him more for good equipment , and non of them unhappy when he want more money for 1 more trip to Catalina island , None of them post feedback 5 star for this business. Why? He lie 1 thing to another to take more money ,, he said have shop in mexico have to close and move to Pasadena .. I guess He did so bad business and rip off too many people so he had to run away ..,, He though is OK to write a bad check and no one can do about that… scam and liar do bad business will face justice ..the credit card advice me to take action to this owner . because limitation credit car company can do ,they not judges …so this matter will have to go to court ,let Javier Lopez explain why the check he pay to student as promised but no payment , He cancel service and wrote on the check, “Termination of relationship agreement ” and sign on it .. He turn around call the bank and stop payment .. , , people think carefully before step in this shop .. I picked the wrong diver west 5 star turn out ..a real bad shop..I have to see shop owner in court to get money he agree to pay me but check no money, stop payment .” scam ”
I will post back when i have court day , stay tune – via
