Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to like this local dive shop and support local. The events that transpired caused a negative effect and I do not recommend Bermuda Triangle Dive Shop.
I am a current OW diver with 53 logged dives and have been diving since 2016. I went to this shop when relocating here to get my AOW cert for an upcoming dive trip I have planned. I went into the shop and met Lenny who was great by the way and signed up for the AOW cert dive course. I paid the $600 fee and then waited to receive my eLearning.
After several days of not getting any information on the eLearning I emailed the shop. I spoke with Aaron and he was very nice as well. I was informed that my order was in-process, and I should get something in 24-48 hours. It took 5 days for me to receive my eLearning. A little irritating but no big deal. I completed the E-learning and then was ready for my check out dives.
I had been told several different things by the shop at this point, like I needed to do pool learning dives, which is not true for AOW cert. So, I decided to go to the shop again and meet Dave the owner to schedule and finalize my checkout dives. I was initially told that my checkout dives would be completed in Florida as they go every month. I would be reasonable for my hotel, and such and would just meet them at the dive site. This was all fine and I understood.
Upon meeting Dave the owner, he stated that the Florida trip was not included in the AOW course and the cost to dive in Florida with him was over $900 for two days. I was shocked. I was told I would have to wait until June or July when the water got warmer in the quarry for me to do my check out dives for the price I paid. This was never originally told to me, because if it was I never would have signed up with this shop to begin with, as I wanted my AOW cert before my upcoming trip.
After Dave and I spoke in the shop for over an hour he stated that I could dive in Florida for my check out dives for an additional $250, to pay for his time and cost. So now my AOW cert was costing me $850 plus tax and only included my eLearning, 5 checkout dives and rental equipment. I would still be responsible for my own transportation, food and lodging for Florida. I was annoyed at this point to say the least, but I paid the money as I wanted my cert before my trip.
I would later go into the shop again to confirm the trip. Here I was told by Dave that the trip would not happen as I was the only person who had signed up. He told me to wait until a few days before because he might have some students join last minute. Because I had to arrange my own lodging this is unrealistic to wait until two days before a trip.
At this point I had two separate encounters with Dave that were not very great, and I really didn’t want him being my dive instructor under the circumstances. I have been diving long enough to know that you must feel comfortable and safe with your dive instructor to learn and enjoy your dives. Dave did not make me feel either of these things and I was not going to dive with him ever.
I spoke with Aaron and was told that I could get store credit as they do not allow refunds. This was fine as I had some equipment that I wanted to get anyway. However, after emailing the shop and attempting to contact them again to get this is writing they are not responding to me. So now I am out $850 for an AOW course that this shop never completed with me. They took $850 from me, and I have received no service, no check out dives and no communication. Buyers beware at this shop. This is beyond unprofessional. It is such a shame to see a local business treat a customer this way and take money for services never rendered. – via
