6 months spent in barefoot conservation, and I leave with the plan to come back. Was the best decision of my life to leave Switzerland for this project for so long.
I pass my divemaster there, with an amazing instructor.
The dive sites are wonderful, even if during the week we spent most of the time around Arborek for the science part, the Saturday is fundive so we go in all the beautiful dive sites further away.

The science part is really interesting too, we learn about fishes, substrates, inverts and damages in the reef.
Once you finish the science training you can participate to the survey dive, and collect the data.
They also have a coral nursery, in three different stages and a shallow one is an educational for the kids. We did some lines with them and they can do snorkeling to see how it grows up.
You can share with everybody and perfect your knowledges about diving, and underwater world.
I was afraid for the science training at the beginning as I don’t come from a scientific background, but they are really patient to teach you and I learnt so much.

The comfort is what you can except on a remote island like that, but all the staff (from the boat crew to the project manager) is amazing, and want to make you happy and feel good.
The food is really good too, and we all cook together once per week (as Sunday is day off for the chef).

If you plan to come, and you really want to be part of this volunteer project, don’t hesitate for a second. If you wait for a 5 stars hotel, just pass your way. – via google

Just spent 4 amazing weeks with Barefoot. It has been fantastic to learn about the consevation work and to participate. The knowledge I now have about the target species, how to recognize coral damage and so forth will benefit me hugely on my future diving trips.
The diving around Arborek is world class and staying for a longer time in one island really makes you feel as a part of the community.
Barefoot is NOT a 5-star resort accomodation is basic, there’s no running water or flushing toilets. No AC and electricity only parts of the day. But this is the reality for everyone living on Arborek and part of the experience.
One thing I don’t understand though, is why they allow people to join for 2 or 3 weeks? It takes 3 weeks to learn all the science, so people staying short term are really just there on a resort vacation.
We brought all our own dive gear, and I would recommend o do so, as the rental gear is shared between several volunteers, and some of it is very used.
Loved th experience, participating in the science and the amazing diving❤️ – via google

6 weeks barefoot conservation and I leave without shoes but a heart full of great memories. Expecting paradise when I decided to leave Germany to go for some volunteering I found much more than that. For me – Arborek, the village, the barefoot camp and the people have a magical and catching good vibe. It made me feel home and more myself than ever before. Literally I found out diving is the best thing in the whole wide world (in general but even more in Raja Ampat) and being passionate about something is amazing. I had fun diving before but with the help of the barefoot staff I (think) I’m really good at it now. With the help of an amazing instructor I was able to improve my skills and may call myself OWAD and rescue diver now. I learned a lot about the ocean and am super thankful for a science department I couldn’t imagine any better. Being able to understand how things down there working and about animal behavior is super cool. I really enjoyed using the knowledge under water and help with surveys and coral nursery care as well as manta identification. Operations in barefoot are organized well and if there are any issues there is always a lovely project manager having an open door for you.
The staff is amazing and they’re doing a great job – working as a team and make you also feel being part of it (it takes some time until you are able to really help – so I wouldn’t recommend any stay unter 4 weeks but that’s my personal opinion). I would a 100% recommend a stay with barefoot when you want to live a simple but good life, learn about marine science and have a authentic volunteering experience you are really able to work as part of something valuable.
I’m thankful for lovely pencakes for breakfast and delicious food every day, dolphins swimming around me when I try to focus on morning yoga on the jetty, guitar and singing nights, skies full of Shooting-stars and the best sunrises and sunsets I’ve ever seen in my life. And most important diving diving and even more diving! Being realistic – nothing is perfect, everywhere is room for improvement and you should really inform yourself about the camp and not expect a holiday resort. You have to wash your own dishes, have small cleaning duties every day to keep the camp tidy and need to bring yourself in. Your shower is a bucked and a scoop and the toilet gets flushed with ocean water. There are small animals you live together with and sand everywhere. In my opinion it’s beautiful to live this “basic” life but you should know to not be disappointed when arriving. – via google

5.0/ 5

I spent 6 months at Barefoot conservation to do my intership and take the Divemaster course! I made one of the best choices of my life!
I have met so many people and I have taken the best of each one of them!
The staff is amazing, they try every day to do what is possible and fulfill everyone’s requests and you always feel at home.
It was an amazing experience!
If you are interested in marine life and conservation Barefoot is the place. They have a beautiful coral noursery and I loved taking care of the corals, from cleaning the noursery to changing damaged ropes, even done with children when possible! Amazing coral and reef projects are on the way.
Activities in the camp take place whenever possible. You can organize with the children to meet them and teach them English. During the DM course the instructor organized a Discover Scuba Diving with the children for me and other DMt!
Fortunately, beach cleanings are occasional! During my time me and other volunteers, walking along the beach you can feel free to collect everything but also one day we organized with the manager and the volunteers a mega cleaning in the sea and on the beach for more than 3h.
The project manager, scientific staff and the instructor try every day to do everything possible to make new experiences possible and learn a lot, from life on the village to everything related to the ocean.
Raja ampat is one of the most beautiful places in the world where I was lucky enough to dive together with other volunteers and together with them enjoyed diving with all aquatic projects Manta ID, Nudibranch ID, Reef Check monitoring and Coral Noursery!
I was lucky to find this place and if I could spend another six months of my life I would.
There may be difficulties and problems in all places in the world, nothing can be perfect, and in Barefoot I also learned that the difference lies in having the will to help, having understanding and patience.
It has been an honor to spend this time of my life in Barefoot which I wish to get bigger and bigger. I will never forget everything I learned in Barefoot, on a small island in the middle of the sea called Arborek.
See you soon, Agnese – via google

Spent one month with Barefoot Conservation on the beautiful island of Arborek and it was the best experience.

Learnt so much about diving and marine conservation as everyone is very invested and share the same values. The staff is the best team you can dream diving and learning with, and having fun of course.

Life on camp is the heavenly, very basic but makes you realise what matters the most, and you get use to it really quickly.

Arborek families are very welcoming and the island makes you feel like home.

Would recommend it 200%, adding also that the Raja Ampat dive sites are the most beautiful places. – via google
