My wife and I can’t say enough good things about Avex Surf, the owners, and their staff! From beginning to end, the folks there were totally on it.
Communication: BEST experience I’ve ever had with a surf company, especially since we were communicating internationally. We had a thousand questions in the planning of our trip to Sayulita, none of which were all at once. Aanya (the owner, who was always super quick in response) was friendly, positive, and gracious with every one of our questions and concerns. She made great suggestions based off our personal skill level and desires and booked us a comfortable week’s worth of lessons (four total) at what I think was the best location and time(s).
Professionalism: Couldn’t be beaten. Our lessons were taught by Gabriel, who happened to be Avex’s head instructor. He clearly leads an outstanding crew, and his spicy Argentinian demeanor demands excellence from all those working under him. It was obvious to see that his crew both likes and respects him, and everyone strives to make him and the company proud. (In an industry where “flaky surf instructor-dudes” are a dime a dozen, we immediately knew that we had made the right choice!)
Quality of lessons: So much improvement!! My wife and I always take lessons when surfing in a new area or vacationing. It’s helpful to know where the locals recommend going, and we learn something new every time. The lessons provided by Gabriel were a total game-changer. Positive, patient, and super encouraging, he pointed out several things that both my wife & I had been doing incorrectly and helped me personally make a colossal breakthrough in both my pop-up and stance. We both surf in Washington state; as soon as possible, we hope to apply what we’ve learned from Gabriel in sunny warm Mexico to the chilly arctic waters of the PNW!
Price: A steal. Lessons include the board, leash, rash guard, and ride to one of two locations. You MUST surf La Lancha if possible. Sayulita is nice, but a little crowded. La Lancha was absolutely STUNNING. Crystal blue waters, impeccably clean white sandy beaches and beautiful headlands dot this oasis away from mega crowds and buskers. Truth be told, I’d pay more even if prices went up for this experience, and we’re broke surf bums!
Overall: What more can I say? Hands down the BEST experience we’ve ever had with a surf school. We made very cool connections with Aanya, Gabriel, Pato and others there, and even though it may be a while till we can get back to Sayulita, we would IMMEDIATELY rebook another round of lessons with these guys.
