Back in the early 80s, I used to go here with my friends when it was known as Huey’s Lake. We’d pay a nominal fee and swim in extremely clean water. Women were occasionally topless and Huey would sometimes ride around the perimeter on horseback with a revolver holstered on his side. Good times (and rating reflects those good times. I’m admittedly not sure what it’s like now). 🙂 – via

Came to this place for the first time today. As I arrived i wasn’t sure if I would get an opportunity to swim as the clouds were hovering over and thunder was close to the area.
The owner (Justin) made me feel welcome and told me to hang around and wait for the weather to clear up. He was kind enough to offer me their gym facility to use if needed too.
After about 10-15mins I was able to get my swim session in. I came for a 30 min swim and ended up staying for a good 3hrs.
Justin and Steven both were very nice and friendly we made good conversation.
Even though this is about 55mins from me, will definitely be coming back more often. – via

Great place to swim in town. Water was clear and what more do you need?
Google has the wrong location marked for the entrance, which is actually on cottingham st.
Facilities are sufficient but don’t expect anything fancy. Lake is really deep (50ft per the checkin guy) which probably helps keep it clear but bring a float if you’re not a strong swimmer. – via

I am so grateful to have found a lake that is within beltway 8 and fulfills all my needs. Large enough for a 1000 m swim, no kids under 17 (unless they’re training), clean and relatively clear water (for Southwest standard!). I came here to for SUP, kayak and long distance swimming. Will definitely come here again – with my dogs!! – via

Lake 288 is awesome. Where else in any part of Southeast Texas can you swim in a place and see your toes? Not to mention there are no alligators or alligator gar or any other critters I don’t care to swim with. My wife and I went for the first time after I got a new kayak. She rented a SUP and I played with my new yak for hours. It was so much fun we bought my wife a new SUP the next day and we’re back out there. To those reviewers who say the water is gross, well maybe you should go swim the lower San Jac with bull sharks and Superfund waste site toxic pollution all up your snorkel and find out what gross water really looks like. Bet you can’t see your toes in that nasty soupy water. Lake 288 totally rocks, you guys keep on doing what you do, and we’ll keep coming and having a ton of fun. – via

I love this place, HOWEVER, the owner is incredibly rude (and I am not the only person who feels this way) and treated my husband and I disrespectfully. He was very confrontational and unclear about what the costs were. He made us both feel really uncomfortable and I even felt somewhat threatened. We will NOT be coming back, which is a real shame because this place has the potential to be the perfect summer spot in Houston. – via

Really like being able to come here and enjoy clean and fresh water so close to downtown Houston. I’ve only done the open water swimming, but having multiple distance options (point to point and laps) allow you to customize the distances you are swimming. They also have paddle boards, paddle board yoga, and cross fit there that allow for other options while you are there. A great “off the beaten path” location for someone looking for a good workout that’s a little different than you typically find. – via
