Re: Hammerhead Experience

The sharks are beautiful and we saw a few from the boat at a distance while we were on the surface. Sadly the visibility wasn’t great so we couldn’t see them while diving. We also saw a gorgeous manta ray on the way back and stopped to look at it which was great.

I wouldn’t recommend going with this company if you are at all nervous about diving as they mess you around, don’t communicate well and promise things they don’t deliver. They messed around our dates and told me that my friend and I couldn’t fit on the boat together so would have to go separately, although we had done everything asked of us when making changes to our booking. When I said I didn’t want to dive without my friend they rang and told me that Neil their super experienced instructor would be my “personal tour guide” for the day so I could relax. This sounded pretty great so I agreed, but when I got there Neil was driving the boat and didn’t get in the water. There was one instructor for 8 divers. She was lovely and super helpful, and I really appreciated her help during the dive, but she also had 7 other people to look after in the water.

Overall quite a stressful and chaotic experience that I wouldn’t repeat. I feel really sad about it as I love sharks and think this has potential to be an amazing trip. – via google

1.0/ 5

Let me preface this by saying I have around 1400-1500 dives across nearly 22 years of having my certs, and have worked in a few shops leading 100s of dives and trips myself.

Overall, this was the worst dive experience I have ever had. I’ve previously dived on bad air that made me sick, in cold lakes in the UK where vis can be so bad you can’t see your hand in front of your face, and on dives where I’ve had serious Bali Belly attacks mid dive.

By far the worst thing was Neil (I’m guessing the owner). Neil was very good at making you feel like you were imposing on his boat day out – from constant passive aggressive comments, having to have the last word on everything, blaming everything on anyone else, being rude to his workers, and generally trying to belittle everyone – he was not someone I ever want to have to encounter again. I’d liken him to a friend’s unreasonably irritable/grumpy/emotionally abusive dad that you are incredibly sorry your friend has to deal with.

The communication was terrible, it was a miracle if I could get a response to basic questions and even then they wouldn’t answer them – just answer the question they wanted you to ask. A friend who was meant to come on the trip with us booked on but never received any comms on the dive. Turns out they were actually fully booked but didn’t feel like telling him he’d paid for a space that didn’t exist. Even in person it felt like a real struggle to squeeze any answers out to questions like – where are we getting the boat from?

Ah the boat… their 7m RIB. It’s pretty embarrassing really. Probably ok with 6 maybe 7 people on with gear. Cramming ten people on for a “45 minute” journey was seriously uncomfortable and a terrible way to start the day. There’s no shade so make sure to use plenty of sunscreen and bring some toupee tape to keep your hat attached to your head. Also, bring a physio so they can work out the aches in your spasming back and bum from getting smashed up and down on the pontoon for 70 minutes (definitely not 45). The email from NZDiving also says to bring towels, sunscreen, food, water, etc. but… you can’t bring it on board or you’ll have Neil telling you off for bringing the items you were told to take with you. We managed a bag between three of us which Neil threw around the boat when it needed to be moved.

The boat is jampacked with people and gear so it’s really difficult to set everything up and comfortably put your BCD and equipment on. It would have been easier to throw everything into the ocean and put it on there but after Neil’s angry comments it didn’t seem worth it.

The dive site itself was great but unfortunately the divemaster was saddled with 7 divers from a range of different certs to take down. It took c.30mins after getting in the water before we started the dive due to buoyancy issues, tanks, weighting, not knowing how to do a dive briefing, etc. My partner’s gear she brought herself also got damaged when paired with NZDiving’s equipment so that wasn’t great either (naturally Neil blamed her).

I could keep listing things but this is already my longest review so I’ll put some key points:

Pros
• The gear was kind of maintained – only one part of my regulator was leaky, which I had to fix myself.

Cons
• Everything else
• Neil gets a special mention here because he should not be in a job where he has to talk to people – via google

DONT RECOMMEND!

Never had such a bad experience. We paid 600 NZD and got nothing in return. First it was always postponed until my father went back to Germany plus the day before the second postponed dive they stated that we can’t dive with them as we are not certified (which I clearly stated at the booking, which was happily accepted attached with the invoice to sent them 600 NZD). Now they won’t sent me my money back and we have to go to the small claims court. Just intended to have a memorable experience which turned into a nightmare… – via google

2.0/ 5

I’d like to share our experience with NZ Diving. We booked the Poor Knights dive for 2 people. The booking was confirmed a few days prior to the dive, which was great. On the day of the dive, we were supposed to meet at the Tutukaka Marina at 9am, as per the itinerary details on their website. My confirmation email stated only 9am, but the location was in their office – the first confusing thing, which I, however, cleared over a phone call. We drove for 2.5 hours to be at the marina by 8:40am. Not knowing what to expect, we assumed there would be some signage.
At the marina office, we asked where the dive charters leave from and were pointed to Port M from where all the boats starting to filling up. We ran to check each boat heading to the Poor Knights to see if we were with them. None of the companies had heard of NZ Diving, which made us worried. I called the number from my confirmation call, nobody picked up, and my email went unanswered. After running around and asking every person in the marina, all the boats left by around 9:15 am, and we thought we might have missed ours, as the itinerary said departure was around 9am. We went to the local dive shop in the marina, but they too had never heard of them. At this point, if I hadn’t personally visited their shop in Warkworth weeks earlier, I would have thought we were scammed.

To ensure we went diving, we booked a dive at the shop for the next day. Then we went for a walk around the marina and around 9:32 am, we saw a small trailer boat arriving with dive tanks and decided to ask if by any chance they were from NZ Dive, which they were. I was quite upset because for the last 45 minutes, we had been running around thinking we missed them. I was greeted with “well, we were supposed to meet at 9:30,” which was clearly not true since everywhere it said 9am, and the other divers looked as confused as we did. A simple apology would have solved this issue, as mistakes can happen.

There was clear miscommunication, we were not given clear instructions on where to go, and apparently, we weren’t even given the right time. Another thing not mentioned anywhere is that the boat is a wet boat, a small RHIB with no sunshade. We did not wear hats as nobody mentioned this. We also needed to prepare our equipment (fair), which can be confusing for people who don’t dive every day. Luckily, the owner’s daughter, who wasn’t out dive master but only went with us, jumped in to help me. She frankly saved our experience and made us feel better.

With charters like this, those who pay expect to feel safe and prepared. Unfortunately, this was not the case. They seem to have been operating for quite some time, and I believe this is a big minus.
Things to note before you buy: you travel for 1 hour there and back on a wet boat, which is very uncomfortable, especially after dives. There is no sunshade – bring a hat. There is no surface interval, even though it says so in the itinerary on their website. We dived in two groups – while one is diving, you’re cold and burning under the sun with nowhere to hide.

At the end of the day, everything can be understandable; mistakes can happen, but it is very important to acknowledge them and apologize. I never got a response to my email from that day or the 10 missed calls and a voicemail that I left them. And all that is the reason I am writing this review. Really hope this will get better and it will not happen again to other people. – via google

I was searching for Seaquel wetsuit sales online. It shows New Zealand Diving offered a real good deal!

Although I live in Wellington, Neil and Jacqui still managed to provide me a fit wetsuit with a couple of shipping back and forth. I really appreciate their excellent service.

I recommended it to my friend, then she got this amazing quality nz made wetsuit on sale too. We both are very happy with our purchases.

Thank you Neil and Jacqui! – via google
