Bigfoot Hostel and Volcano Boarding: Thrills and Spills in Nicaragua!

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind experience in Nicaragua, the Bigfoot Hostel and Volcano Boarding tour is a definite contender. However, like all ventures, there’s always a blend of the good and areas of improvement.

Reasons to Choose Bigfoot Hostel and Volcano Boarding:

  1. Guided Excellence: The volcano boarding tour seems to be a highlight, with many praising the guides for their expertise and welcoming nature. Corey B. was specifically impressed by Matthew and Henry, who ensured a safe and memorable experience. Charlie C. echoes this sentiment, calling Henry “the most informative and helpful guide.”
  2. All-Inclusive Packages: The volcano boarding experience goes beyond just the thrill of the slide. Anaid J. was thrilled with the comprehensive package that included drinks, snacks, marshmallows, and dinner.
  3. Perfect Base to Experience León: Elida P. labels Bigfoot Hostel as “the friendliest and funniest” spot in Nicaragua, offering excellent activities to explore León’s charm, from the sunrise tour of Cerro Negro to beach shuttles.

Things to Consider:

  1. Payment Issues: Corey B. highlights a potential issue concerning payment to local guys who help with board transportation. The concern lies in how they’re compensated, raising questions about the financial dynamics and the hostel’s responsibility.
  2. Hostel Organization and Cleanliness: Adam H. was disappointed with the hostel’s management, pointing out issues like delays in check-in, occupied beds, messy rooms, and linens with stains.
  3. Know What to Expect: While many praise the volcano boarding tour, not everyone stayed at the hostel. It might be wise to cross-check if you’re looking for accommodations too.

In conclusion, while Bigfoot Hostel and Volcano Boarding’s adventures seem to be a hit among many, it’s essential to be informed and set the right expectations when planning your trip. Ready to board down a volcano? It promises to be an experience like no other!

20K+ boarders slid down at up to 101 km/h with us!

The founder OF VOLCANO BOARDING…

Volcano Boarding is an extreme thrill-seeking kind of sport created by an equally extreme, Australian thrill-seeker, Daryn Webb.

Daryn Webb sent his very first boarder down an active volcano back in 2004. Daryn and his crew endured a fair share of trials and errors, testing everything from picnic tables to mattresses, even a fridge door [ YES, a fridge door ] until… they created a sit-down toboggan made of metal and Formica-reinforced plywood.

The adventure sport was born!

1.0/ 5

The volcano boarding trip itself was cool. Unfortunately, however, those guys only see the $$$ and pack a school bus full of 70 people at 37 degrees in the full blasting sun! Some participants had to stand for the entire trip (1 hour)! Mass-tourism at its best. The real horror started on our way back though. On the way back, it was mainly all about drinking alcohol and partying. At the very end one of the participants got very drunk and grabbed one of the organizers. Absolutely wrong, yes and he should have been kicked out and excluded from the party. But the way things were “solved” by the organizers was just violent. A guy with blond long hair who apparently works in the hostel ended up beating him up. When the situation finally calmed down halfway and the drunk guy wanted to go home, the blond long-haired guy came back once again and hit him from behind with full force in the face, so that the drunk guy passed out. He had to be driven to a hospital. Absolutely cowardly and pathetic. And the worst thing: some other guys from the hostel kept supporting the blonde guy. To everyone: stay away from this hostel until hopefully personal consequences are drawn and the blonde long-haired guy is fired. Probably will never happen though – so just stay away! There are many other organizers which offer the same trip. – via google

2.0/ 5

In Bigfoot’s defense, I didn’t know this was a party hostel upon booking. I booked the aircon dorm room (which says aircon from 4pm-8am on their site) and could not sleep at all. The music from the bar goes until 1am or later & is so loud, it feels like you are in the bar all night. The Aircon is only on from 6-6 and is not very effective. Overall, I wouldn’t have chosen this place when there’s so many other nice, quiet places to stay nearby. I got sick during my stay and asked to move rooms to a quieter space or get a refund so that I could go somewhere else and they wouldn’t let me. Going here for a party night would be fun, but I wouldn’t recommend staying here. – via google

3.0/ 5

I didn’t stay here, but I joined the beach bar crawl they do on Tuesdays. It was a mostly good time, but one of the employees started insulting me for not drinking in the bus. First it seemed like jokes, whatever he was probably drunk, then he just got aggressive. At some point he threatened to have me kicked off the bus, wanted to fight me, and some ladies decided to get in between so things didn’t escalate. This employee ruined an otherwise enjoyable experience. Bigfoot hostel should probably raise the bar on who gets to work there, and at least make employees aware that some people might just enjoy the party without getting completely hammered. – via google

5.0/ 5

I went with my girlfriend for the sunset volcano boarding with big foot and it was super fun.
We arrived at 1pm and paid in advance so we jusr needed to sign a waiver and pick our t-shirt.
Then the crew explaind to us a bit about the tour and showed us some videos of it and gave us the gear.
From there they squeeze about 55 people into 1 bus so make sure you have a sit because some will stand or sit on the floor for about 1 hr drive on a jumpy dirt road.
Before you arrive they stop to pay the 5 usd or 200 cordobas entrence fee that they collect on the bus, and for the bathroom.
When you arrive its about 40 min hike to the top that is not that hard its just a bit uncomfortable with the board, but you can pay 3 or 5 usd to someone that will carry it for you.
When you arrive to the top the view is amazing and they will start to explain you how to get down.
I wanted to be the last to view the sunset from the top and it was amazing.
They check your top speed and if your the fastest boy or girl they reward you with a free entrence to the party.
If your the slowest you will do the ice bucket challenge or the lava shot challenge.
Then you go back on the party bus and everybody start to get drunk with a lot of alcohol that they bring.
They stop half way at some family house and they provide you with actually a decent dinner theres vegetrian options too.
They read everybodys speed and head back to the party bus untill you arrive to the party at theire hostel.
I recommend it. – via google

Guides were great but there was a problem…

Matthew and Henry were amazing guides on the volcano boarding. They made us feel very safe. 5 stars for them and the overall tour.

Several local guys came along to help carry boards if we desired and I was disappointed to be told that without anyone taking them up on their offer (as was the case in our group), they don’t earn any money and it’s up to us to offer some money if we’re able. If that’s true, it is confusing for several reasons. 1) These men were definitely working and helping. Without them, the work for Henry and Matthew would have been a lot and might have detracted from their ability to do the amazing job they did. 2) The boards and clothing were stored where we picked the local guys up and it seemed like they were responsible for the gear. So either they are being taken advantage of or they are in fact being paid something. 3) Lastly, $35×7(in our group) is a lot of money in Nicaragua and I find it greedy that some of that money can’t make it to them considering points 1 & 2.

I respect the company for helping locals get the chance to earn money for their families from tourists. I do not respect it being up to us to pay their wage when they clearly played a role in the comfort and logistics of the tour. Maybe I’m missing a piece of information here. However, these are my feelings based on the information I have. – via Google

1.0/ 5

This is probably the most unorganized hostel I’ve stayed in. Lack of management.

First the check in was 2 hours delayed, without any notice.

Then we finally got our beds.
The bed I was supposed to have was occupied. A the next one didn’t have a locker connected, because someone had taken it.? The room looked super messy.

Then we got moved to another room which smells of chemicals that give you a bad headache.
The new bed had multiple stains on the the linen.
they changed it as they should, when I told them., but it doesn’t feel like anybody is in control.

I would come for a cheap drink, but save the night for a more organized place – via Google
