Earned my P1 rating with Maren & Brad at Discover Paragliding in 2021, and working towards my Powered Paraglider rating now. I have only good things to say about this company!
First, safety is always top of mind while training. The sport is weather dependent, and environmental conditions may disrupt flight operations. Brad and Maren live close to the flying site, and before you travel in from Portland or farther afield, they will look at the actual flying conditions and make a call. Conditions can change quickly, so often a training day will start on the beach and end in the classroom (or vice-versa). Rest assured that Brad and Maren take the safety of their students seriously, and they will teach you to recognize safe and unsafe flying conditions.
Class sizes are small with 2:1 or 3:1 student/instructor ratio. Their equipment is well maintained and in good working order, and you will learn proper care and handling from the outset. On the very first day of training, we practiced inflations and kiting, the prerequisites to flying. Took my first towed flight up to 1500′ altitude on the second day of training, and it was SPECTACULAR! It’s an amazing feeling to be soaring free above the beach, taking in the ocean scenes at the breaking waves. After ~20 flights completed over several days, I completed all requisite skills and passed the P1 exam with ease.
Brad and Maren helped select appropriate equipment, and my new glider was ready in a few weeks. They were kind enough to extend a 3% discount for cash payment on materials to avoid CC processing fees, which any thrifty person can appreciate.
Maren and Brad are friendly and easy-going, and I found them very personable. They are invested in making this a sport you are passionate about and can safely practice for years to come. I highly recommend Discover Paragliding to anyone considering flight lesson. They have been helpful and professional in every interaction, and respond to e-mails promptly.
