This review is for the Culebra Excursion as a scuba diver. This negative review is mostly against Capt. Nelson, but also to call out some issues with Aqua Adventure's business practices, lack of customer service, and the experience overall. There is no bathroom on the boat, and they had it crowded full of both divers and snorkelers. Wetsuits are not included in the "full rental gear" package, and you don't find this out until you are on the boat. The rest of the rental gear is in pretty bad condition. Aqua Adventures treats its customers with a “Take it or Leave it” attitude. This time I took it, and I strongly advise other divers to leave it.
#1: Poor equipment maintenance. I expect rental gear to show some wear and tear, but to be safe and functional. There was no fit check for gear prior to boarding the boat. I observed the staff performing gear inspections after the vessel was underway. Additional gear failures were discovered during the first dive, when two divers had to terminate their dives early due to faulty rental BCDs, and another due to broken rental fins.
#2: Rude and unprofessional staff. There were 3 staff onboard: Sayeed, Antonio, and Capt. Nelson. Sayeed and Antonio were both polite and professional. The positive attitude that they maintained while dealing with such a negative Captain is the only reason I give 2 stars. Capt. Nelson thought he was funny, but I observed him making rude comments to customers. At the end of the trip, Capt. Nelson asked that we leave a review on Trip Advisor. He specifically asked that if it was a 5 star review, to give the credit to Capt. Nelson and AquaAdventures, but if it was less than 5 stars, to say he was someone else from SeaVentures (a competitor dive agency). In retrospect, I wish I had booked with SeaVentures instead.
#3: Dishonesty, false advertising, and poor communication. The rental contract states “Full rental equipment (Includes everything needed to Dive)” provided. No wetsuits were provided. Communication and customer service leading up to the trip was generally poor and a little bit rude.
The invoice states that we paid for: 2 tank dive, 9 am to 4 pm. What we got was two quick 30 minute dives, and headed back to the docks at 1:25 pm, arriving at 2:39 pm. Divers still had 1500-2000 PSI left in their tanks on the second dive. The weather and conditions were beautiful and amazing. No explanation or apology was given. The entire experience felt rushed and unprofessional. - via
