For my first foray into the ocean off of Sri Lanka, first up was the SLDT Shop located in Negombo, not far from the International Airport. With a courtesy pickup from my accommodations, we were off on our way to the shop a few minutes away - the admin was brief, the explanation of the sites and their topography was detailed and the handling of my gear (I brought my own) was as if it were their own.
I experienced two dives with SLDT's Divemaster Pula & our Captain, about 8kms off the coast. The Captain doubled up duties to help us both with our gear, right down to putting on the fins! Always a smile and helpful hand, the both of them and visitors can attest; when you are in a foreign land and in foreign waters especially - it's nice to be surrounded by people who are looking out for your best interest & safety above.
The dives themselves are always up to chance - I got to see mollusks, plenty of small schools, lots of big eels and couple cool surprises. The choice of sites considering the previous days were less than stellar was good for me - 14m'ish depth, an attentive guide who allowed me to do as I pleased within a safe distance :)
After the dive, Pula - the DM - was helpful in rinsing my gear and was a solid dive buddy all around, Sachaa - my point man above water - was super cool - provided me some Food recos and even worked out a transfer to my next destination.
I try to dive all everywhere and I try to choose places with an attention to detail, safety first mindset and that 'family' feeling you get when you're one of the gang - SLDT ticked all the boxes in that for me, thank you for the experience and I will always reach out the next time I find myself in Sri Lanka :) - via
As mentioned in almost all my reviews - I am big on service, moreso, the creation of a family atmosphere; that I am one of the crew no matter my skill level... Fulidhoo Dive presented this to me even before I stepped foot in the Maldives with caring detail by Adele via several emails. Upon arriving in Fulidhoo, I met with Ali and the next day with the rest of the staff and everyone was encouraging, detail oriented and welcoming to their little family fold. This is important as you are essentially putting your safety into the hands of strangers, exploring some difficult waters in search of rewarding experiences.
On my 3rd dive, I experienced a bad blockage and had to 'x' my dive. Dive guide Navaz took me aside and explained what potentially was happening as well as provided some advices on how to proceed with my setback. I took a couple days off and returned to dive with Navaz taking special interest & care in my wellbeing while guiding me below. He was incredibly patient and always checking in and this meant a great deal to me and my overall safety. Special mention goes out to their young guide, his name escapes me, however, he was amazing and at 18, this is a wonderful surprise.
All in all, I experienced 7 dives with FD and they were all great. From the welcoming smiles to the detailed briefs, the welcomed hand holding yet spacious enough to have your autonomy intact... Everything was as one would appreciate when leaning into a Dive Shop for their oceanic aspirations.
Thank you FD, thank you FD crew and the next time I find myself on the Vaavu Atoll, I'll be sure and drop in for an adventure.
