This was a series of misfortunate events.
I was originally booked through Carnival Magic to go diving with Blue Water Divers in Bermuda (a trip of a lifetime).
The excursion was canceled. No reason was given. (1st red flag)
I book individually with Blue Water Divers. Only morning dives were available. No afternoon or night dives were available. My husband and I had to switch our itinerary to fit the starting hours.
We then booked an afternoon and evening cruise with Carnival.
However, I noticed that the dive may not be completed until 2 something on the reservation. I sent an email asking for confirmation or if the dive boat could drop me off closer to the cruise ship. I never received a reply.
I paid the extra $40 for each of the 3 flights to haul my SCUBA gear to and from Bermuda, just for the 2-morning dives.
This also meant lugging around an extra suitcase for 2 1/2 weeks.
We embarked on Carnival Magic on September 24. After that, I had no Wi-Fi or service. I still had not received a reply from Blue Water Divers. (2nd red flag) Therefore, I canceled my afternoon excursions with Carnival due to the possible time conflict.
We planned to do beach hop using a bus pass on the first day. I would dive the second day and my husband would snorkel with another company. I would have to take a taxi to get there in time, but I could take the bus back.
Where there was surf, there was poor visibility due to the amount of particles in the water during snorkeling. Where it was calm, it was clear. However, most beaches had medium to strong surf.
When the second day came, I got up early, walked to the area to catch a taxi with gear, and paid $20 to travel to Blue Water Divers (about a 10-minute drive).
Upon exiting the taxi, I asked for the location of the nearest bus stop, to which he stated, “At top of the hill”.
When I get to the dive shop, I was told “Sorry” ”It was canceled due to hurricane and boat mechanical failure.” ”You should have gotten an email.” He was anxious to get rid of me and offer to call a taxi, and gave me $20.
Now the roads in Bermuda have no shoulders. There may be a wall on the other side of the line. They drive fast and on the opposite side that Americans drive on. Not finding an alternate route, I preceded walking up the hill on the outer edge of the lane with a backpack with all my gear (about 35 pounds). I am a 57-year-old lady.
I get to the top of the hill. I see no little hut for the bus stop, so I continue walking back toward the cruise ship until I can find a hut for the bus stop. (I realized later that the blue poles were also bus stops.)
By the time I get back to the cruise ship, it is too late to make arrangements for a different excursion, and I am left with Snorkel Park as my only alternative. (It was sad seeing the devastation.) The park does have free Wi-Fi for guests. This is when I received the September 25 email of cancellation (2 days earlier) on September 27.
Returning to the cruise ship, I heard how clear the water was from my husband and other snorkelers. - via
