My family and I got up at 2:30 am to make the 5:00am lift off, so it was an early start, but by the time we arrived at the farm where the balloon equipment is stored, we were all incredibly excited to see the sunrise from the air in a basket under a huge colourful balloon. Our pilot was a very experienced aviator, being a NZ champion in ballooning and gliding, and he and the ground crew involved us in the set-up process, inflating the balloon, doing the safety checks etc. and this hands-on, interactive experience was great.
Floating high above the Earth over the patchwork of farmland, houses, forests and with the mountains in the distance as the summer sun rose over the Canterbury plains was an experience we'll never forget.
