5.0.0

My buddy and I flew out from California to check this place out. We're not experts, but we grew up in Santa Cruz, CA, have traveled around the world surfing and know our way around a lineup. Prior to our visiting, we spoke with a wonderfully helpful (and patient) guy at the shop. He was great and recommended doing the Advanced Reef Training prior to booking an hour. Doing so also discounts your next hour by 50%. I cannot express how critical it was to take the coaching session prior to getting on the wave. Ray was our coach and he was amazing. Loads of gratitude for his efforts in recommending boards, talking about the wave and various strategies and also shouting tips from the pier. We booked a 90m coaching session and then an hour thereafter. The 90m turned into about 30-40m in the water. The EAST Reef wave is VERY different from an ocean wave, and requires you to have an exact takeoff point and a bit more foam than you expect. You can cheat a bit but not much. It took me the First 2 sessions to even get the takeoff down. After stepping up in foam (we took an hour break, highly recommended taking an hour break between sessions), I was finally able to lock in the takeoff. As Ray said, stick as close as you can to the metal pier, you'll naturally angle out once the wave comes and pop up quick and angle towards the pier ASAP. For me, the main goal was to ride the thing until the end both ways. The EAST wave is a bit of a screamer and unforgiving, not many sections to slow down, just quick hits. And watch out for the section at the mid-flag, the wave slows down, but keep your speed to make the section. Overall, a great experience with wonderful customer service and friendly people (Victoria, Jake, Ray, Madison). Y'all really made it a great trip. Only bummer in the experience -- A real nice lifeguard named Warren took some photos of us on 09/26/18, we bought him a round of beers and he never sent the shots! Lame. Oh yeah, and it gets REALLY expensive like, real quick. All-in-all, 5 star experience. Thanks! - via google
