Pasos, the lead instructor, didn't build rapport with us, which left me anxious and patronised. He wasn't welcoming, spent ages ogling the young women who had just finished instead of getting started with our safety briefing, blew vape smoke at us, etc etc. He was rude and brusque.
I had trouble because my legs are bouyant, which I found out later is a common problem for women, but instead of helping me with ankle weights and explaining that it was common, he yelled at me to try harder and told me that his colleague would "hold me down" without thinking that this would be problematic. I am a great swimmer, I completed an Olympic distance triathlon, including a mile swim in open water. To not have control over my movement in the water was disconcerting, to be told off for this was the final straw. I don't want to be "held down", I want to feel freedom pf movement in the water. This is why I wanted to dive!
I also had soap in my eye, and the face mask wasn't fitted well. The young American assistant was nice, she tried to help me, but Pasos was just as rude to her and, quite frankly, with that level of team cohesion I did not feel comfortable to dive and I left. Pasos yelled at me as I left. I get the feeling that few people disobey him.
First dive disaster. - via
