Mixed experience. The sun was phenomenal and the snow was perfectly ok. The wind was low. I preferred Sauz D'Oulx and Sansicario and it is surprising how little skiing there is in actual Sestriere.
So why were so many lifts shut during perfect conditions? I'd estimate that 10% of the lifts were shut including most button lifts and the long chair to the right of Nubla Nueva in Sestriere. I can only guess it is due to economising by the new owners of the area. The problem with shutting lifts is that you limit the skiable domain - so you are shrinking the ski area.
Sestriere and the Milkyway is a perfectly good area but it is tired and needs investment. It has a lot of competition now and I wonder if the new owners really want too upgrade it? Shutting lifts is not a good start. - via
