As a member of the Howe Military Academy staff since 2007, I have been around for some of Howe's worst times and some of Howe's best times. For those reading the bad reviews on here, you must first know that anytime there is drastic change, which Howe was desperately in need of, there will be some push back from both staff and parents who have "settled in" to the status quo way of life. Over the last year, first with Col. Benson arriving in January 2018, and COL Tate taking over in July 2018, there have been MANY welcome changes that have been needed for many years to help restore Howe Military Academy as a prestigious Military Academy in the Midwest. Do major changes rarely ever occur without some type of major push back? No. That being said, the changes that have been made over the last year are starting to show their TRUE results. Our Varsity Boys Basketball team as a whole averaged above a 3.0 GPA academically this year and also currently holds a 10 win - 8 loss record (for those who were around the last few years, you know that Howe basically only won roughly only 1 basketball game in the last 2-3 seasons). This year, the administration listened to parental concerns about sports and went out and hired coaches for each sport that actually had experience in the sport, rather than forcing faculty and staff to pick a sport and coach it. As well, our CyberPatriot team just finished 78th out of 1,851 teams nationally in their division, and placed 1st in the State of Indiana. In the 9 years that Howe has been competing in the CyberPatriot competition, this is one of the best placements the team has achieved overall. As far as academic concerns go with some of the negative reviews, highly qualified teaching staff were hired recently to better serve the "rigorous" academics that we advertised. Student academics are now more aligned with actual college-prep material to prepare graduates for college. This was lacking in the past, but has drastically improved. Although it has lowered some GPAs recently, it is better preparing the students for what they will truly face in college, rather than easing them on by with a diploma only to get to college and feel completely lost. The academy has had 6 different Presidents since my arrival in 2007. I will not hesitate to say that the heart and passion that our current President has is second to none when it comes to the education, safety, and success of our students. - via
