I've been out to the SS Yongala three times so far with Steve and Matt at Yongala Dive and every time has been a great experience. The shop is just over an hour's drive from Townsville (leave TSV at 6 am if driving, will leave you time for a coffee at Maccas in Ayr before getting there!) Or you can stay on the camp site next to dive shop and stay in bed a little longer. From the minute you arrive at the shop, there is a welcoming and fun atmosphere with coffee/tea and biscuits waiting for you as you get your gear sorted and do a dive briefing. Heavy gear is loaded on to the boat for you, then you meet the boat at the beach down the road and on board for a quick 30 min trip out to the site (2 x 250 hp engines on the back of the boat make for a fast trip). The dive site itself is teeming with sea life - big rays, sharks, sea snakes, giant trevally, soft corals and lots and lots of small fish to see. Every visit I've had has been a treat. Snacks and a bit of the wreck's history are shared during a surface interval. Then after your second dive, its straight back to the dive shop to shower and enjoy a sausage sizzle. You are usually finished around 2 pm ish so an easy drive back to TSV if that's where you're based. I highly recommend Yongala Dive for anyone wanting a quick, safe, fun and easy trip out to dive on the SS Yongala. Thanks Steve and Matt for being such great dive hosts. - via google
