For the TLDR crowd - Aquanauts is top notch, go ahead and book with them. For a more in-depth review, read on.
We just got back from a large family vacation in Puerto Aventuras. Out of our group currently only my wife, son and I dive. We were planning on about 3 mornings if 2 tank diving. We were looking for a small local dive shop versus one of the big operations seen at many of the larger resorts. Since we had heard some good things about Aquanauts Dive Shop based on reviews on Google and Trip Advisor I contacted them and another dive shop, who’s name I don’t remember.
At first I was a little concerned because I read that there were “new” owners and a lot of the reviews were for the previous owners. Well, let me tell you, those concerns were completely unfounded.
For starters, Robyn was super responsive getting back to me and answering all of my questions as we set up our dates and let her know what we were looking for for our dives. Second, new was in quotes because the current owners Robyn and David, have owned it since 2016 I believe, so that isn’t really new. Third, this lovely couple were just absolutely amazing! We didn’t feel like customers, we felt like family. They really went out of their way to make getting to the shop easy for a family unfamiliar with the area. Then they were super accommodating when we had to change some dive times around when one of our family got sick.
Finally, their team was also fantastic. I should mention that it looks like Dave and Robyn treat their team like family too. We did all of our dives with Emilio, one of their instructors/dive master, and he took great care of us along with their boat captain/mate team of Eric and Angel. We didn’t dive with Monica, their other instructor/dive master but hung out with her on the boat and in the shop and look forward to also diving with her in the future. The families we saw her take out for Discover Scuba Diving (introductory dives for non-certified divers) always came back with smiles on their faces.
My wife and I have our own gear, but my son rented a BCD, wetsuit and regs. We are nitrox certified and which was available and used for all of our dives. They had plenty of gear in good repair and plenty of weight to go around and all of their prices are more than reasonable especially for their high level of service.
