I didn't stay at one of the main hotels, and booked the "Catalina Island Snorkel" package the night before we did it. It sounded a bit too good to be true. Although it technically doesn't open until 9, we were supposed to show up at 8:30, but they managed to get us on a boat anyway. They took us to "the wall" which was coral teeming with all kinds of fish, then to Catalina island where they had an open bar (rum with your choice of coke, sprite, or a beer) and souvenirs for sale. Then there was an opportunity to enjoy the beach, or go to the outdoor "aquarium" which had sting rays, starfish, and a sea turtle. They then served a pretty hearty meal, with plenty of food for seconds. The view of the beach was beautiful, then on the way back they had more rum and coke on the boat, and took us a bit inside the Chavón River which was really neat. A great experience and I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. - via google
