Mixed experience at Fumba Beach lodge. The locations is wonderful and care has clearly been paid to making sure there are plenty of quiet corners to escape and take in the views. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We were however disappointed by the reception we received from management, which felt cold. One of our group fell ill with conjunctivitis; when Sharon, the manager, was made aware of this she offered little in the way of the sympathy or support, but seemed preoccupied with her own concerns about the spread of this epidemic illness. She was very chatty with most other guests but showed us little care, and repeatedly told the ill guest to cover his eyes with his sunglasses. This was compounded when another guest fell ill with food poisoning, and again rather than offering support of any kind Sharon made clear that the guest could not have fallen ill due to the catering at the lodge. Another manager was very rude when we asked to pay our lunch bill by card, appearing to blame us for not being aware of the 50USD minimum card spend, telling us to go to an ATM (of which there are none nearby) to pay. Whilst most staff were very kind and thoughtful, our treatment by management left a bad taste in the mouth.
Whilst the rooms were characterful and all had wonderful views onto the beach a few yards away, the bathrooms were outdated and dirty.
Great views and a relaxing vibe, but not the typical friendly hospitality we had come to expect in Zanzibar - via
