We all had a great time diving for 3 days on the liveboard Weta Molas.
This was the first trip of the season with only 3 divers, and the liveboard was in excellent state. The 4 people crews (captain, engineer, cook, helper) was highly professionnal and eager to make are stay as good as possible. The food was excellent, and the snacks between dives welcome. The rooms were comfortable enough, and sleeping on the deck a nice option. The diving equipment was good. Also, considering the sometimes stong current, we really appreciated the dingy pilot being always only 2 mn away to pick us up.
The dive master (PADI instructor actually) was able together with the captain to adapt the itineray to our preferences. Not so easy due to the sometimes strong currents and therefore the need to arrive really at the right time for each diving spot.
Out itineray was the following;
- First Day: 9:30 departure from Labuan Bajo, Sieba Besar and Mawan day dives then full speed south on the falling tide to Padar island for 1:30 sunset hike up/down, and finally a night dive in Padar Bay.
- Second day: nightly departure to Komodo island for an early morning visit, then North on the rising tide to Botu Bolong and further North to the Golden Passage the Cauldron.
- Third day: early wake up for morning dives on Crystal Rock and Castle Rock, then Tarawa Besar on the way back to Labuan Bajo.
The dives were absolutely great, as good as described in various websites. Thanks again to our great dive master. My preferred dive remain Botu Bolong for the coral wall, the diversity ans quantity of small and large fishes, the turtoise and many kind of sharks.. Mantas were mainly seen at Mawan. The North sites were nice and safe for 'advanced' divers (30+ dives) as the sites were dives at the right time / falling and rising tides.
Tips:
- Discuss the itinerary with the Captain and Dive Master. There is some flexibility depending on tides.
- Strong currents can mostly be avoided depending on sites, and the experience there may vary widely depending on tides. Still, speeding along the Cauldron narrow channels is a lot of fun.
- Visit Komodo early morning (7AM) to many active dragons, before they hide to rest during the hot day.
- If you can, spend 4 days on the liveboard. Komodo is full of great diving sites and takes some time to navigate leisurely on a liveboard. - via
