Irresponsible -- I took a Mares BCD that had a weight pocket fail during a deep dive to this shop, as requested by Mares. After explaining what the issue was -- bear in mind I had to show the person in the shop (I assume the owner? who had a patronizing demeanor) how to lock the weight pocket, as she didn't have a clue (clearly not an expert on Mares SLS, which is fine), I was told it failed due to user error. Keep in mind the pocket that failed dropped to the bottom of the ocean, and this person suggesting it was user error: a) was nowhere around me when it failed; b) was not able to take a look at the failed pocket!; and c) didn't even know how to lock in the one pocket I did have! I also repeatedly expressed how I double checked the proper latching of the pocket before the dive that led to the failure. I find it very irresponsible and a safety concern for an unqualified person to make an assessment like that on life support equipment. If I had taken her word for it, and kept using my BCD with a potential flaw (it's still possible!), I would potentially be risking another situation that could lead to an uncontrolled ascent. I guess there are professional dive operators / shops in the industry, and then there are some that are not. - via
