Our family of 5 are a whitewater rafting, kayaking, sup'ing family. We had very little/no experience in the ocean, let alone surfing. In addition, as much as I love rivers with big whitewater, the ocean makes me uneasy (never admitted this to the instructors). By the end of our time with Misael, Tony, and Jerry I was completely at ease and having a blast (even though surfing is not something I have yet to be any good at). When I initially saw the size of the waves, I was very concerned. After a short time, I realized the wisdom behind the location of our lesson (deeper water so that when the inevitable tumble happens, no sand is eaten ;-)). The 2 days of lessons were a great value, with professional, (extremely!) patient, kind-hearted instructors. They are quick to smile, and even quicker to offer suggestions and encouragement.
Our youngest celebrated his 17th birthday while on this trip. We mentioned this, and Tony offered to organize a beach fire and party to help celebrate. We paid Tony for his time and the use of his beach toys (beach toy rentals are available through his business, Pirate Surf School) and covered the food costs, but Tony did everything else. He pulled off one of the most fun birthdays my son has ever had, complete with beach cooked chicken/plantain, epic sand volleyball, and great conversations. Random people walking the beach joined us and made the night that much more special. Even with his busy schedule, Misael was able to join our celebration which really touched my momma heart.
Our 2 oldest kids stayed behind in Costa Rica to backpack for a few months. My husband and I did not hesitate to tell them to contact Misael if they needed a local emergency contact. These surf instructors were people we called friends by the end of our time with them!
Not that any other convincing is needed, but they won me (avid animal lover) over when they jumped in to prevent a dog from being mauled by another dog during our land lesson. Those guys have serious sprinting skills!!
That's what I call an all-inclusive surf school!! - via
