Overall, we had a good experience. We used OX for two expeditions--one to Pacaya and one to Fuego and Acatenango. The Pacaya experience was great and we had a good guide.
The Fuego/Acatenango experience wasn't as good. We didn't feel like the guides gave us much info on what to expect. It almost seemed like they just wanted the extra money for Fuego--they really encouraged everyone to do the Fuego hike (which is more money), but when it came to Acatengango the next morning (which is a short, easy hike, much easier and shorter than Fuego), they suggested staying at the camp and watching the sunrise and the volcano from there. We were also disappointed with the sleeping arrangements. The shelters are TINY. I wasn't expecting to sleep much, but we were literally shoulder-to-shoulder with the people next to us, actually touching the people on each side of us so it was impossible to sleep. They sleep six to a shelter and they have plenty of space to build another couple shelters then they could sleep four or five per shelter. People might actually be able to sleep.
Having said all this, Fuego was absolutely spectacular and the sunrise was too. Besides being frustrated with the sleeping situation, it was a fun time. - via
